Uganda’s Participation at the 24th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community.

H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of Uganda joined fellow Heads of State at the 24th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) held on 30th November 2024 in Arusha, Tanzania. The Summit, held under the theme “Promoting Trade, Sustainable Development and Peace & Security for Improved Livelihoods “, focused on advancing regional economic growth and cohesion. The Summit saw Kenya assume Chairmanship of the EAC, with Somalia appointed as Rapporteur. Partner States recommitted to removing barriers to trade and finalizing the remaining protocols for deepen economic integration. The discussions also highlighted ongoing efforts to fully integrate the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia into EAC systems.

 

Additionally, the summit emphasized adopting strategies for digital transformation and climate-resilient economic practices across the region. The summit also recognized the role of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and welcomed the tribute book marking the 25 years commemoration. Preceeding the summit, President Museveni participated in a High-Level Side Event commemorating the EAC’s 25th Anniversary that was held on 29th November 2024. Reflecting on the regional bloc’s achievements, he emphasized the rich history of trade in the region which dates back to over 1000 years as evidence of a “Connected Trade Area” (CTA) that linked the East African coast, central Tanzania, and the Great Lakes region long before Europeans arrival. He called for leveraging this historical foundation to strengthen modern economic collaboration and regional trade ties. Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to the EAC’s vision of a prosperous, secure, and integrated region. The outcomes of the 24th Ordinary Summit and its associated events mark a significant step toward achieving this goal.
